The File Manager and File Manager Pro plugins for WordPress are vulnerable to Directory Traversal in versions up to, and including version 7.2.1 (free version) and 8.3.4 (Pro version) via the target parameter in the mk_file_folder_manager_action_callback_shortcode function. This makes it possible for attackers to read the contents of arbitrary files on the server, which can contain sensitive information and to upload files into directories other than the intended directory for file uploads. The free version requires Administrator access for this vulnerability to be exploitable. The Pro version allows a file manager to be embedded via a shortcode and also allows admins to grant file handling privileges to other user levels, which could lead to this vulnerability being exploited by lower-level users.
The vulnerability exists in the 'target' parameter of the 'mk_file_folder_manager_action_callback_shortcode' function, which is not properly validated, allowing file path manipulation (path traversal, CWE-22/CWE-23). In the free version, exploitation requires administrator privileges. The Pro version allows embedding the file manager via shortcode, and administrators can grant file management permissions to users with lower roles, which expands the potential attack surface to less privileged users.
An attacker can read the contents of any files on the server (including configuration files containing authentication credentials) and upload files to any directories outside the intended location, which could lead to further server compromise.
The File Manager plugin should be updated to a version higher than 7.2.1 and File Manager Pro to a version higher than 8.3.4. Patches are available in the WordPress plugin repository according to the vendor's references.
