The Malware Scanner plugin and the Web Application Firewall plugin for WordPress (both by MiniOrange) are vulnerable to privilege escalation due to a missing capability check on the mo_wpns_init() function in all versions up to, and including, 4.7.2 (for Malware Scanner) and 2.1.1 (for Web Application Firewall). This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to escalate their privileges to that of an administrator.
The vulnerability results from missing permission verification (missing capability check) in the mo_wpns_init() function present in both plugins. According to CWE-304 classification, this is an omission of a critical authentication step in the security sequence. An unauthenticated user can call this function directly, resulting in privilege escalation to WordPress administrator level without needing to possess any credentials.
An unauthenticated attacker can obtain full administrator privileges on a WordPress site, enabling complete takeover of the website, installation of malicious software, data theft, and further actions in the infrastructure.
The Malware Scanner plugin must be urgently updated to a version higher than 4.7.2 and the Web Application Firewall plugin to a version higher than 2.1.1. Patches are available in the official WordPress.org repository. Until an update is applied, it is recommended to deactivate both plugins.
Malware Scanner plugin (by MiniOrange) β all versions up to and including 4.7.2; Web Application Firewall plugin (by MiniOrange) β all versions up to and including 2.1.1.
