A vulnerability in Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system of an affected device. To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must have at least Read Only Admin credentials. This vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted HTTP request to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to obtain user-level access to the underlying operating system and then elevate privileges to root. In single-node ISE deployments, successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could cause the affected ISE node to become unavailable, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. In that condition, endpoints that have not already authenticated would be unable to access the network until the node is restored.
The vulnerability stems from insufficient validation of user-supplied input data (CWE-77 — command injection). An attacker sends a crafted HTTP request to the vulnerable device, which allows him to first gain access to the operating system at user level, and then perform privilege escalation to the root account. In case of ISE deployments with a single node (single-node deployment), successful exploitation may lead to unavailability of the ISE node.
An attacker can gain full control of the Cisco ISE device operating system with root privileges, and in single-node environments cause a DoS state that prevents network access for new, previously unauthenticated end devices.
Apply patches available from the vendor in accordance with references published by Cisco at: https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-ise-rce-4fverepv. As a risk mitigation measure, strictly control and limit the number of accounts with Read Only Admin privileges and monitor unexpected HTTP requests directed to the ISE administrative interface.
