CVSS 9.8v3.1pub. 2026-04-28upd. 2026-04-29

** UNSUPPORTED WHEN ASSIGNED ** Inconsistent Interpretation of HTTP Requests ('HTTP Request/Response Smuggling') vulnerability in Pony Mail leading to admin account takeover. This issue affects all versions of the Lua implementation of Pony Mail. There is a Python implementation under development under the name "Pony Mail Foal" that is not affected by this issue, but hasn't been released yet. As the Lua implementation of this project is retired, we do not plan to release a version that fixes this issue. Users are recommended to find an alternative or restrict access to the instance to trusted users. NOTE: This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.

🤖 AI Analysis
How it works

The vulnerability results from inconsistent interpretation of HTTP requests by the server and intermediary network components (HTTP Request/Response Smuggling). An attacker can craft HTTP requests in such a way that different infrastructure layers interpret request boundaries differently, leading to unauthorized session or administrator account takeover. The issue affects only the Lua-based implementation.

Impact

An unauthenticated network attacker can take over the application's administrator account, gaining full control over the Apache Pony Mail instance.

Mitigation & patch

The vendor does not plan to release a patch since the Lua implementation is officially deprecated. Migration to an alternative solution is recommended, or access to the instance should be restricted to trusted users only. Monitor the availability of the Python implementation (Pony Mail Foal) as a successor.

Who is affected

All versions of the Lua implementation of Apache Pony Mail. The Python implementation (Pony Mail Foal) is not vulnerable, but has not yet been released.
